Dear Red Sandstone Elementary Families,
Can you believe it's already fall? It's time for parent/teacher conferences, and we aim for 100% attendance, so please schedule your meetings with your child's teacher(s) from October 7th to 10th. Following conference week, we will enjoy a well-deserved fall break to recharge for the second quarter.

September posed challenges for Eagle County Schools, and Red Sandstone was not exempt. I commend our staff for thier positivity and commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all students. We've trained for emergencies, whether a gas leak or wildlife encounters (the bears like our dumpster!). I also want to acknowledge the support and care from the Vail Police Department, who have ensured a strong presence in and around our building.

Your children and their teachers know and practice what we do in case of an emergency. We want to share our practices and protocols so you, too, know how to respond. Please join Officer Schwartz and me on October 2nd at 6pm in the library to learn about our safety measures. We will speak about our training and practices for fire drills, lock-down drills, building evacuations, and reunification. We will also field your questions and concerns. Some staff will offer supervision in the gym for your children during our conversation.

Thank you for trusting us with your children's education; your support is invaluable.

Very sincerely,

Anne C. Heckman

Music Update from Mrs. Archey
Music! Music! Music! Our students at Red Sandstone have had a terrific beginning of the year musically! Our students are working on reading, composing, and writing rhythms. They celebrated the Star Spangled Banner's birthday - September 14 by learning about the history, significance, and of course the words of our national anthem. We are beginning to plan for our first performance - Veterans Day on November 11 which will honor our local veterans. This will be an in-school performance and will feature our 5th grade as the leaders of the event. More info to come soon!!

Art Update from Ms. Mizwicki
K-5 artists have been hard at work on their Original Works art fundraiser projects. Stay tuned for more information on this coming later in October!

STEM Update from Mrs. Fletcher
In STEM, we have a few grades wrapping up projects this week.

Our 2nd graders have been hard at work building pinball machines. Ask your child about the simple machines and obstacles they incorporated into their designs.

If you have a 3rd grader, they should know the difference between a natural hazard and a natural disaster… and ask if their tower withstood the Jello earthquake!

Meanwhile, our 4th graders are concluding their biomimicry projects. Encourage them to tell you about the lifeforms that were mimicked in their new inventions. Thank you for your continued support!

SEL Update from Mrs. Asia

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This month we will explore the next of 7 Mindsets.

The Passion First Mindset teaches us that we are all unique expressions of human existence. It’s vital to find out what our individual strengths and talents are so that we might connect them with our goals and visions for the future. In this mindset, we work with students to understand their unique gifts, their skills and strengths, and how to share them with the world to the maximum extent possible. Not only will they explore their interests, they will begin to identify their core values and what they stand for. The next step is helping them learn how to make their dreams into reality, tapping into both the courage and perseverance needed to overcome any challenges they encounter in pursuit of the lives they desire.

The 4 critical components of Passion First:

1. Focus on Strengths – We all have things that we do well. When we do what we’re good at, we perform better and get better results, which benefits both us and those around us. It is critical to play to our strengths and spend our time doing what we’re best at in order to create the most value.

2. Explore Your Interests – We all have things we enjoy doing. When we like doing something, we do more of it, even in our free time. When we do things that energize and engage us, our focus is greater, we perform better and improve faster.

3. Make a Stand – It is very important to play to our strengths and interests whenever possible. We all have to do things we aren’t necessarily good at or enjoy, which is why we must understand our core values. We will always be strongest when we act from our values; this is when we wield our greatest power to overcome obstacles and challenges.

4. Be Authentic – Great dreams must start within. To do something extraordinary, a dream must leverage our strengths and interests, it must align with who we are (our core values), and it must matter greatly to us.

Small Groups: As part of our school’s social-emotional learning program, I will offer small group sessions designed to support students with various topics. Students can be recommended to join the group by their classroom teacher. These sessions will take place during lunch or at a flexible classroom time, ensuring they do not interfere with regular class content. Small social skills groups will aim to help students build friendships, resolve conflicts peacefully, and foster confidence through art exploration. The sessions will involve discussions, games, and activities focused on these skills.

Please feel free to contact me at joanna.oleszczak@eagleschools.net with any questions!

PE Update from Mr. Beall

Hello Tigers and Families!

We have had a blast in PE over the first 6 weeks of school. The students set multiple records competing in the first-ever Red Sandstone Summer Olympic games. Over the next few weeks, grades K- 2 will be working on their throwing and catching skills and then playing some exciting parachute games. Grades 3 - 5 will be working on kicking skills and playing fun and unique kickball and soccer games. After the break, we will jump into practicing our striking skills and playing a wide range of racquet games.
